Tarzana: under-rated, often overlooked, and fabulous!

Tarzana is situated in the San Fernando Valley — surrounded by Reseda to the north, Woodland Hills to the west, Encino to the east, and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. What I love the most about Tarzana are the open spaces — you can avoid the crowds while also still enjoying the perks of living in a big city. The outdoor activities are amazing, especially the hiking and mountain biking.

Tarzana is just next to the Santa Monica Mountain Park, where you can hike on trails all the way to the beaches in Malibu. Home to a number of gated communities, Tarzana offers residents access to two country clubs, El Caballero Country Club and Braemar Country Club. South of Ventura Boulevard, Braemar Country Club has 20 tennis courts and a 36-hole golf course. So many diverse restaurants are available to you here in Tarzana, and parking is also easily found (unlike most of Los Angeles).

One of my favorites is Vino Wine and Tapas Room, which has a relaxing lounge area and great energy and food. They have happy hour on wine and tapas every day from 4 to 7 p.m. One of my other top choices would be the French restaurant Le Sanglier. It is pricier, more elegant, and worth every penny. The food is amazing and the service personal and attentive.

Interestingly, Tarzana owes its namesake to Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan stories. Burroughs purchased the land in the late 1910s. Burroughs named the land Tarzana Ranch, after his most famous character. He later sold plots of land for residential development and the town was named Tarzana in his honor.
